Centre For Community Development Health and Family Enhancement Initiatives (formerly known as Community Development Initiatives CDI) paid an advocacy visit to the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Oludaisi Elemide, at House of Assembly Complex, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta today.
This strategic meeting discussed critical issues affecting the community particularly the menace sexual and gender-based violence and high incidence of procurement of unsafe abortion.
The Speaker commended the organization’s efforts in eradicating Sexual and Gender-based Violence in Ogun state.
CDHFI presented a memorandum outlining gaps in the existing guidelines and recommendations for review, specifically highlighting the need for comprehensive legislation to address sexual and gender-based violence. Hence the need for Safe Abortion law in Ogun state.
During the meeting, CDHFI emphasized the importance of collective action in eliminating these heinous crimes and ensuring a safer, more equitable society for all. We also stressed the need for laws that prioritize Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, particularly in regards to safe termination of pregnancy.
The Rt. Honourable Speaker who was accompanied by principal officers of Ogun state 10th House of Assembly promised that the Ogun state house of Assembly will work with CDHFI and other stakeholders with the view of having an enabling law to address Safe Abortion in the state and reduce the menace and also making Reproductive Health Rights more readily available to women and female adolescents.
One of the significant outcomes of the meeting was the legislators, promise of active representation from Ogun State House of Assembly members at the organization’s forthcoming interactive workshop. This workshop, scheduled to take place the next week, aims to bring together stakeholders to discuss and find solutions to the issues of sexual and gender-based violence and reproductive health rights.
The advocacy visit marked a significant step forward in Centre For Community Development Health and Family Enhancement Initiatives’ efforts to promote community development, health, and family enhancement. The organization remains committed to collaborating with key stakeholders, including government agencies, community leaders, and civil society organizations, to drive positive change and improve the lives of individuals and communities in Ogun State.
