The Centre for Community Development Health and Family Enhancement Initiative (formerly known as Community Development Initiatives (CDI)) team made a significant move in their fight against sexual and gender-based violence in Ogun State. They paid an advocacy visit to Dr. Azim Kunle Ashimi, Immediate Past Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Ogun State Chapter, at his office in Abeokuta. This visit was part of their ongoing Salvage Program aimed at eradicating sexual and gender-based violence in the state.
Dr. Ashimi warmly received the team, and they had productive discussions focusing on identifying gaps in the STOP guidelines and mapping out hospitals for survivor referrals. He emphasized the importance of preventive measures like consistent condom use and family planning in mitigating unwanted pregnancy risks. Dr. Ashimi also highlighted the severe psychological effects of unplanned pregnancies, including frustration, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
The team and Dr. Ashimi agreed on the need for increased awareness campaigns, accessible healthcare services, and comprehensive family planning options. He also stressed the importance of a holistic approach to handling the psychological effects of unplanned pregnancies, including mental health support and safe spaces for open discussions.
Dr. Ashimi commended the organization’s efforts and pledged his support for the initiative. The team presented him with a referral form, customized tee-shirt, and a detailed memorandum highlighting key areas in the STOP guidelines that require urgent attention. This visit marks a significant step forward in the fight against gender-based violence, fostering stronger ties between the medical community and advocacy groups
